GIMP Plugins Section Article

GIMP is an outstanding free multi-platform image editing program, and it can only be compared to Photoshop in terms of popularity. It boasts a huge community of developers and a massive number of users. Just like it happens with other open-source programs such as the also popular Firefox, the strength of this solid free image editor app lies in the possibility of extending its functionality by the use of plugins. With the great advantage of being developed by its users who create them according to their actual needs.

So, today I'm going to tell you about GIMP's plugins: I've selected a few, those which in my humble opinion you cannot miss, and you are about to learn what they are useful for. In our other section called GIMP Tutorials I'm going to tell you how to install and run them, so if you find any of these to be a must have for you, then you can check there for a how-to guide.

The first plugin I'm going to tell you about is Liquid Rescale and it is my first choice because with Liquid Rescale you can perform content-aware resizing when added to GIMP. You must be asking what is that and how can is be useful for me, well, they say that an image is worth a thousand words, so watch the next video and you'll see.

The Liquid Rescale plugin, is based on the Seam Carving algorithm which enables you to re-size any given image in a not uniform way and at the same time keep its original characteristics such as avoiding the distortion of important parts. This plugin also allows you to consistently remove sections of the image.

Secondly we have SaveForWeb, what is really interesting about this plugin is that it will help you to find balance at the moment of uploading your images to the Internet, by achieving the optimal compromise between small size and good quality for your pictures, furthermore it can be done in a really quick and easy way. On the third place I put Antialiasing: what we have her is an extremely useful plugin when it comes to smoothen and fix straight lines. As a matter of fact this plugin became a standard feature of GIMP and you do not even have to install it as it is already included in the ''Filter'' menu.

Fourth and last I would recommend.GimpPublishr because with it you are enabled to turn GIMP into a next level and publish your pictures to Picassa and Flickr directly from GIMP's menus you can download from here. (only make sure you have Python already installed along with GIMP)

As you can see, the possibilities of expansion brought by these four astonishing little pieces of freeware are just fascinating. not only allows you to increase the functions of this already fully functional free imager editor, but also to share it with your friends via social networking services.
