7-Zip Tutorial #6 – How to Decompress a Split Archive

7-Zip is a simple and quite plain looking archive manipulation utility that is free, but do not be fooled by its appearance, we are before a really solid piece of freeware that offers great functionality. You can easily achieve really high compression ratios that will help you to save HDD space and gain speed in your file uploads, downloads and emailing. In a previous tutorial I told you how to split (or break up) an archive into parts for easier sending, today I´m going to show you how to decompress a split archive (also called multi volumes) in an easy and quick way using 7-Zip.

Before we start with this tutorial make sure to have 7-Zip ready to run in your computer, if not click the “Download” button we have placed for you on top of this page. Follow the instruction the InstallIQTM installation manager will give you to complete the setup process.

Assuming you have received/downloaded an archive that came in several parts or volumes, you have two ways of decompressing it, the first and most simple is to browse to the directory/folder where this split archives are located and right-click on the zip.001, part01.rar, 7z.001 or the first part in the sequence if it came in other supported formats.

From the context menu select any of the three “Extract...” options the first will let you select the location of the decompressed file, the second will automatically decompress the file in the current location and the third will create a new folder called after the split archive name. For this example I selected the first:

The second way is to open the 7-Zip file manager and browse to the location of the split archive. Again select the first volume and click on the Extract button, a dialog where you can specify the location of the extracted file will popup.

Click OK and a progress bar showing the advance of the extraction will be shown.

After that you'll find the extracted file in the desired location.
