AbiWord Tutorial #10 – How to Check Spelling and Grammar While You Type

AbiWord is a great free word processing application that offers all the features and tools you may expect from any professional word processor. One of the greatest advantages of AbiWord is its lightweight, occupying as little as 20.9 MB in your HDD. Today's tutorial is about using its powerful spelling and grammar automatic checker.

Consider having AbiWord installed and ready to run if you want to make the best of this tutorial, for your better convenience we've placed a “Download” button on top of this page, by clicking on it you'll get the InstallIQ installation manager that will take care of the setup process.

So, if you want to activate the automatic spelling and grammar checker, you need to define the language, go to the menu bar and select “Tools” → “Set Language...”

An interactive dialog will appear, first check the “Make default for document” check box and the select the desired language (I used English (US) for this example). Click OK and you're done.

After that you need to activate the automatic checker, go to “Tools” → “Preferences...”

In the “Spelling” tab check all boxes.

From now on, when you misspell a word it'll appear with a red zigzag underline. Right click on it and in the context menu you'll see a series of options. On top of the list you'll see some correction options and in the lower section other options like “Ignore All” (AbiWord will never ask you to correct this word), “Add” (add this word to the dictionary) and “Check Spelling..” (that opens the Spell Checker).

So choose the option that best suits your needs and the red zigzag underline will disappear.
