AbiWord Tutorial #9 – How to Use the Check Spelling Tool

AbiWord a fantastic free word processor that offers a lot of handy tools and features that make it the perfect solution for satisfying all your word processing needs. In today's tutorial I'm going to share with you how to use the Check Spelling Tool.

AbiWord must be ready to work if you want to make the best of this tutorial. To get this free word processing app just click the “Download” button above, once you have the installer in the designated folder; the InstallIQTM will take care of the whole setup process.

Let's say that you have already created a new document and typed some text in or you've opened an existing document and you want to check the text for misspellings and typos , first you have to go to Tools → Set Language... and from the interactive dialog select the language for the spell-check from the list of options. Here you can also check a box to indicate that the selected language will be the default language for the document. Click OK when ready.

Having selected the spell-checking language, you can go to the menu Tools → Check Spelling. If you want you can also use the F7 key on your keyboard.

The Spelling dialog shows all the spell-check options. As you can see, when AbiWord finds a misspelled word it is shown in red on the upper panel, in the field “Change to” you'll see the most approximate word suggestion and all the suggested corrections are shown in the lower panel.

The possible options are: Ignore, Ignore All (meaning ignore this misspelled word all the times it appears the whole text body) Add (add the red marked word to the dictionary) Change (change the misspelled word with the alternative word of your choice) and Change All (meaning replace the red colored word by the word the “Change to” field shows all over the text body)
By clicking on any of them, the action will take place and next misspelled word will appear. Once the whole text body has been checked and corrected a popup like this will appear:

Click on the “OK” and you're done.
