AbiWord Tutorial #1 – Basic Text Edition
AbiWord is a fully featured free word processor that despite being free is perfectly able to replace other commercial apps such as Microsoft Word or Wordperfect. This versatile and reliable word processor also offers really interesting advantages such as the small footprint over your computer performance and the fact that it is extraordinarily fast even at really low resources consumption, so, unlike other word processor programs, creating, opening and editing document files will never mean that your machine will get clogged or frozen. AbiWord also enables you to insert images and text columns, and make basic text formatting (italic, bold, paragraph alignment, etc.) and that is exactly what I'm going to tell you about today: Basic Text Edition.

But, for you to get started, the first thing you have to do is to have AbiWord installed and running in your computer, if you still haven't, you can go now to the top of this page and click on the “Download” button, once you have the installer (i.e. in your desktop) double click on it and the InstallIQ™ Installer will take care of the rest.

Well, now that you have AbiWord ready to go, I'll tell you how to create a new document, notice that when you open AbiWord a new document is already created and temporarily named Untitled1. If you need to create another new document just go to File > New and it will be created and automatically named Untitled2 you can repeat this as many times you like ad infinitum.

So, this is a blank document you can just start entering text and you can also format this text using the tools you can see on the toolbars. You can start applying some format like bold, italics, underline, font color and different types of alignment as you can see in the next screen capture.

The way of doing this is by first selecting the text with your mouse or using the keyboard (Shift + left/right/up/down arrows) and then clicking on the icon of the tool you want to use for the next example I used Bold.

And here is the result:

For the rest of formatting tools is pretty much the same, select and apply. Neither secrets, nor complicated procedures, couldn't ask for more!!
Final Words
As you can see using AbiWord is dead simple and straight forward. This really amazing free text editor has so many features to explore and we are just starting to scratch the surface of it, on upcoming tutorials I'm going to tell you how to save your documents, setup your page once you have the text ready to be printed or sent by email and much more, so, stay tuned!
