AbiWord Tutorial #4 – How to Insert Footnotes and Endnotes
AbiWord is an exceptional free word processing application which in its appearance and functionality is really similar to the ubiquitous Microsoft's word processing program “Word” however, unlike it, AbiWord is not only free but it also offers real-time collaboration capabilities and full support for all major document types, like MS Word, WordPerfect, Rich Text Format, HTML, OpenOffice.org, and many more. In today's tutorial I'm going to tell you how to insert footnotes and endnotes.
A good start point would be to have AbiWord installed and running on your Windows-based machine, if you do, pass to next paragraph, if not click on the big blue “Download” button above and get your free full version of AbiWord. The InstallIQTM installation manager will take care of the setup process.

After we plunge into the tutorial itself let´s make a brief introduction to notes (footnotes and endnotes) in general. According to Wikipedia: “A note is a string of text placed at the bottom of a page in a book or document or at the end of a text... ...A footnote is normally flagged by a superscripted number immediately following that portion of the text the note is in reference to.
- The first idea1 for the first footnote on the page, the second idea2 for the second footnote, and so on.
- Footnotes are notes at the foot of the page while endnotes are collected under a separate heading at the end of a chapter in a book or a document.”
So, inserting a footnote or endnote to your document with AbiWord is dead simple, first place the cursor where you need the first flag, go to the Insert menu and select Footnote or Endnote according to what you need to do. The footnote or endnote will appear at the end of the page or document respectively in both cases it will have sequential numbering and of course the possibility to write some text.

The footnote will be inserted with its numbering and the cursor will be placed there for you to write or paste the text.

And as you can see the flag is placed where you selected.

An interesting feature of AbiWord is that you can adjust the way footnotes and endnotes look like by changing its style, to do so, go to Format → Footnotes and Endnotes... You can change flagging schemes (numerals, letters, symbols), parenthetical notation, numbering schemes, and more.

Anyway, default style is perfect if you do not want to mess up with tweaking and adjusting.
Final Words
Once again AbiWord demonstrates what a handy and versatile free word processing program it is, as you can see it makes a tedious and annoying task as inserting notes into a 1, 2, 3, easy-peasy. Download AbiWord by clicking the “Download Now” link below and start editing your documents like a pro!
