AbiWord Tutorial #6 – How to Use the Spell Checking
AbiWord is a versatile free word processing application that offers a bunch of tools and features to satisfy all your word processing needs, but what is really outstanding about AbiWord is its collaborative capabilities which allow its users to work on one document simultaneously thanks to its integration with the AbiCollab.net online service. Today's tutorial is about the use of the Spell Checking tool of this amazing free word processing program.

I recommend having AbiWord ready to run in your PC if you want to follow this tutorial properly, but do not worry because if you don't have this excellent free word processor program, the best and quickest way to get it is to click the “Download” button above these lines, the InstallIQTM manager will take you through the setup process.

Let's say you have already typed some text in a new document or just opened a document and you want to check the spelling of it, so, the first thing to do would be to go to Tools → Select Language... and in the popup dialog select the language you want to spell-check with.

Now that you have selected the language go to Tools → Check Spelling... you can alternatively press F7 on your keyboard too.

A dialog will appear with all the options, note that when a misspelling is found the word appears in red on the upper panel and the possible solutions appear in the lower panel.

You can Ignore, Ignore All (meaning ignore all the times this misspelled word appears) Add (add it to the dictionary) Change (change the misspelled word for the alternative you choose) and Change All (meaning change all the times this word appear with the chosen option)
Once you click on any of them you'll pass to the next misspelled word.
You can also check the spelling as you type, to do so go to Tools → Preferences... and from the dialog select the Spelling tab. There is a check-box you must check for “Check spelling as you type”. You can also select to “Check grammar as you type”.

Click OK and the misspelled words will appear with a red zigzag underline. You can right-click on it to get the options for changing it.

Easy-peasy huh?
