LibreOffice Draw Tutorial #6 – Converting 2D Shapes into 3D Objects

Draw is a fabulous free vector graphic editor that comes with the LibreOffice free office suite and like any other LibreOffice component this piece of freeware offers the most advanced features and tools for you you to be able to achieve professional results in all your technical drawings, sketches and diagrams. This tutorial helps you to convert 2D shapes into 3D objects.

Having LibreOffice ready to run is a must if you want to follow this tutorial correctly. You can get your free fully-functional copy of this fabulous office suite by clicking on the “Download” button above. The setup process will be driven by the InstallIQTM installation manager.

Assuming you have already created a 2D shape and you want to convert it into a 3D object, first of all you have to select the 2D shape and it will show its green grip points in this way:

Now right-click on it and from the popup menu select “Convert” → “To 3D”.

The shape will now get its third dimension which is depth and you can adjust it later.

To make further adjustments to the object right-click on it and select “3D Effects” and its corresponding dialog will appear.

Now you can modify its depth and see what it happens.

You can also manipulate the new object in the regular way you handle every other 3D object with Draw: move, rotate, etc.

Within the 3D Effects panel you can adjust a lot of other parameters that we will review together in upcoming tutorials.
