LibreOffice Math Tutorial #3 – Inserting Formulas in Calc
Math is an excellent free formula editor that comes bundled in the LibreOffice office suite. With it you can create mathematical and scientific formulas with accurate formatting including a comprehensive list of elements like fractions, terms with exponents and indices, integrals and much more. In this tutorial I'm going to tell you how to insert in a spreadsheet using Calc.

In order to follow this tutorial and make the best of it you need LibreOffice installed in your computer. You can get your free fully-featured copy of this great office suite by “Download” and once you have it in your designated folder you can launch it, the InstallIQTM manager will take care of the rest.

So, if you want to insert a formula in a spreadsheet using Math you can either do it directly from Math itself and you can also call the app from Calc. Notice that when you insert a formula using Math that formula will not be automatically solved as if you have entered in the regular way.
We have already discussed the way of generating a formula directly in Math in a previous tutorial, so let's see how you can do it by calling Math from Calc.
First of all you need to create a new spreadsheet or open an existing one and position the cursor in the cell you want the formula to appear in.

Go to “Insert” → “Object” → “Formula” on the menu.

The Math interface will show up as a lower panel and a formula frame will appear in the selected cell, notice that Calc's menus also change to show Math menus.

Just enter the formula in the lower panel and you'll preview it in the formula frame above.

You can also use the Symbols catalog by clicking on the corresponding button in the menu bar.

To finish the formula edition just click elsewhere in the spreadsheet and the formula will be fixed to the selected cell.

Now you can adjust row and column to fit the formula in its best.

You can always come back to edition mode by double-clicking on the formula.
If you make a single click on the inserted formula you'll get the green grip point to change its position.

Final Words
As you can see inserting formulas in your Calc spreadsheets using Math is really simple and quick. If you are thinking of giving LibreOffice a try do not hesitate and click the link below, you´ll never regret!
